I saw another Solo on my way to work, so I thought I’d repost. Hi PNW/Vancouver Oppo! Want to come to the Meccanica Christmas function with me? I think it might be cool to see their factory, talk to them and maybe test drive one finally (the Solo that is).

Maybe not in Nov/Dec, but I’d like to make it back that way sometime soon.

I’ m guessing these aren’t sold in the US? Looks like a more car-o-fied Elio, and we know how that ended up, you know, it didn’t.

They are planning on selling them in the USA. The thing is, these already are being sold/driven.

I assumed that was in Canada only. I’m guessing the motorcycle laws are different there. Elio’s biggest hang up was that they didn’t want their car registered as a motorcycle but the US goverment says anything with 2-3 wheels cant be a car.
Also I LOVE the idea of an electric 356, but 125 ,000 USD MSRP that’s bananas .

I’m really hoping they can bring the Tofino to market. I love it already from the concept art, like a modern Cappucino.

Elio was fine with not being registered as a car, since that got them out of all the safety standards that would have completely busted their targeted MSRP.
What they wanted was for people to be able to use their 3-wheeler without having to wear a helmet and without having to get a motorcycle endorsement on their drivers license.
The one real legacy that they will probably leave behind is that Elio was actually quite effective in getting most states to create a special exemption for 3-wheeled vehicles with enclosed passenger compartment and car-like controls. There’s a few states where you’d still need a helmet and motorcycle license, but thanks to Elio’s lobbying efforts, something like the Solo can be sold to customers with regular drivers licenses in most of the country.

They wanted to create a grey area between car and cycle. I didn’t realize that they are least kind of succeeded

Yep, 31 states have some sort of “au tocycle” or “cyclecar ” classification. I mean, there’s still 19 that don’t, but 31 out of 50 isn’t terrible.

I’m still abit sour that they didn’t succeed. I wanted one so bad.
Aesthetically I think the Elio did a lot better than the Solo.
